Verhalenmarkt offers freelancers for desk journalist work
Searching for a good freelance journalist with a good story was already possible on Verhalenmarkt, but the platform has recently expanded its functionalities. Editors can now also use Verhalenmarkt when they are looking for a freelancer to carry out desk work – as explained in this article (in Dutch) on the Dutch Journalism Fund website.
‘Staff holidays and other leave can sometimes lead to editors having a vacancy they need to fill quickly’, says Sander Heijne, one of the creators and founders of Verhalenmarkt. ‘This need fits perfectly with our mission: getting freelance journalists to work without them having to spend a lot of time on acquisition.’ The new function is part of an experiment, taking place shortly before the site introduces a major update in September. This update will include the introduction of paid accounts. Heijne explains, ‘A free version will continue to exist because we really want Verhalenmarkt to be available to all journalists. The paid version will have more functionalities than the free version.’
Verhalenmarkt was launched using start-up funding from the Dutch Journalism Fund. Adessium Foundation has been supporting Verhalenmarkt since the end of 2017, as we believe that strengthening the position of freelance journalists has a positive effect on the quality of journalism. More and more journalists are working on a self-employed basis and consequently spend a lot of time looking for assignments. Using Verhalenmarkt as an intermediary platform should make it easier for journalists and publications to find each other, leaving the journalist with more time for thorough investigative journalism.
