The Netherlands to implement a return-deposit system for small plastic bottles

The Dutch government decided to implement a deposit system for small plastic bottles starting in 2021. In all likelihood, this will also include cans starting in 2022.

This may be considered a historic victory; for many years, supermarkets and beverage companies have been able to fend off this decision on deposits. Our partners Natuur&Milieu, Plastic Soup Foundation, Recycling Netwerk Benelux, Plastic Soup Surfer and Stichting De Noordzee have all lobbied successfully to ensure this decision would be adopted.
