Launch of #OdeToParents campaign of Healthy Generation

This week marks the launch of the national campaign #OdeToParents, an initiative of the Cooperating Health Funds Association that forms part of their Healthy Generation programme. The campaign focuses on the importance of the first 1,000 days in a child’s life, and the role played by parents during this period.

A life-defining period

Traumatic childhood experiences, chronic stress and uncertainty have a lasting impact on the development and health of children. That is why Healthy Generation has developed a multi-year programme that focuses on preventing health damage caused by adverse childhood experiences. #OdeToParents is the first campaign of this programme, which focuses on the first 1,000 days of life. This period refers to the time from preconception to a child’s second birthday, and which is known to determine the rest of their life. At no other stage in life are more biological milestones reached than during those first 1,000 days. The more sound this foundation is, the greater the chance of a child to lead a healthy life. The value parents bring to the table deserves a lot more recognition and appreciation, in the interest of a healthy start for every child.

A foundation for life

Professor Tessa Roseboom, Professor of Early Development and Health at the University of Amsterdam, emphasizes how important it is to appreciate and support parents and carers in the first 1,000 days: “If parents or carers feel acknowledged and supported, it helps them to care for their child. This is important at any time, but all the more so during those first 1,000 days. A child’s organs, brain, nervous system, and immune system develop rapidly from preconception to a child’s second birthday. That period lays the physical, mental, and social foundation for the rest of its life. It is important for parents to feel that they are not alone. Because, after all, it takes a village to raise a child.” More information about this campaign and the campaign video are available on the website of Healthy Generation (language: Dutch).

Partner of Adessium Foundation

Adessium Foundation supports the campaign #OdeToParents of the Cooperating Health Funds Association (Samenwerkende Gezondheidsfondsen). Strengthening (young) parents is an important route to a safe, stable living environment for the new generation. This campaign is part of various prevention methods that Adessium uses to prevent trauma at a young age. We want everyone in the Netherlands to know what harmful stress does to a child, what you can do to prevent damage in the future and how we aim to ensure that traumas are not passed on to the next generation.
