Resilient Mediterranean Sea

A hotspot of biodiversity

The Mediterranean Sea is a biodiversity hotspot. However, the region is under pressure from overfishing, intensive shipping, resource extraction, and climate change. Adessium Foundation is committed to protecting and restoring valuable marine ecosystems, helping to ensure a healthy and resilient Mediterranean Sea.

Facts & figures

  • 0.04% of the Mediterranean Sea is currently strictly protected (source: MedPAN)

  • In 2030, 10% of the Sea must be strictly protected (EU agreements)

How we see this theme

A healthy Mediterranean Sea is essential. Millions of people rely on the sea for food, livelihood, and well-being. It also plays a crucial role in climate regulation and mitigation by absorbing heat and CO₂. Beyond its ecological importance, the Mediterranean is vital for global trade routes and the so-called Blue Economies — economic activities that sustainably utilize the sea, such as fishing, tourism, and renewable energy. The sea, therefore, provides not only ecological value but also significant economic and social benefits. Food security in the region, in particular, is closely tied to the health of this marine ecosystem.

Research shows that economic activities and nature conservation can go hand in hand—but only if at least 30% of the sea is effectively protected, with 10% of it fully closed to human activities (strictly protected). A well-managed network of protected areas strengthens the Mediterranean’s resilience, safeguards endangered species and habitats, maintains healthy fish stocks, and helps mitigate the impacts of climate change.
