Making room for nature in the Netherlands
Nature as an ally
The Netherlands urgently needs more space for nature — to protect biodiversity and adapt to climate change. Adessium Foundation supports initiatives that use nature-based solutions to tackle societal challenges. In doing so, we help create a resilient landscape for both people and nature.
How we see this theme
Nature in the Netherlands is under serious pressure, with biodiversity continuing to decline. It’s essential to ease the pressure on vulnerable ecosystems: by reducing pesticide use, lowering excess nutrients in soil and water, improving water management, and cutting nitrogen emissions that damage the natural environment.
We see nature as an ally. It helps protect against flooding, ensures our water supply, combats drought, and supports our overall well-being. That’s why we support organizations that give a strong boost to nature restoration and development. We also back initiatives that highlight the power of nature, especially in a densely populated country like the Netherlands.
How we go about this
- Restoring nature at scale. We drive large-scale projects that restore and revitalize natural landscapes across the Netherlands.
- Inspiring a new connection with nature. We raise awareness of how nature can be a powerful solution to society’s most pressing challenges.
- Easing the burden on nature. We work to reduce the pressure on Dutch ecosystems, focusing on lowering nitrogen emissions and pesticide use.
