How we see this theme

Safeguarding the integrity of information and the security of our digital environment is essential. We support initiatives that improve the integrity of technology and information, so that everyone can depend on a reliable and secure digital future.

Technology plays a big role in how information is created, circulated and used. Social media and the rise of generative AI lead to a stream of information whose origin and reliability are more and more difficult to verify. At the same time, what we get to see – and what we don’t – is increasingly determined by algorithms. Misinformation prioritized by algorithms, clickbait and AI content are undermining our common understanding of reality

How we go about this

• Fighting disinformation. We support initiatives that curb the circulation of disinformation and protect the integrity of information channels.
• Responsible technology. We promote technology that is ethically responsible and not harmful to individuals or society.
• Fair marketplace for technology providers. We advocate a fair playing field for providers of high-quality information, and protection against the concentration of power.
• Sustainable business models. We promote alternative business models that reward reliability rather than clickbait and sensation.
• Empowering users. We support initiatives that give people more control over their data and help them to approach information critically.
• Fair and verifiable algorithms. We promote more insight into how algorithms work and more democratic alternatives for how algorithms filter and present information.
