New stories: from pesticides to radiator foil

What do the organizations we support do, and why is their work important? We regularly speak with people who dedicate themselves every day to a better society and a healthy living environment. Here is a selection of their stories from the past two months.

From our program Just and Equitable Society

• Low-energy lamps, radiator foil, washing at thirty degrees: combined, they save you a lot on your energy bills. Energy coach Huib from Energy Bank Netherlands Arnhem region visits people at home to see how they can reduce their energy bills. With a combination of useful technology and advice.
• It’s difficult to get help when you’re living in poverty. Shame, anxiety and complex rules all get in the way. The Instituut voor Publieke Economie (IPE) studied poverty relief policy. “I never realized that it was so fragmented.”

From our program Nature and Living Environment

• Natuur & Milieu joined forces with supermarket chain Lidl to start a special pilot project. Their aim: to drastically reduce the use of chemical pesticides in agriculture, without affecting quality or yield. “For many farmers, using a chemical pesticide feels like insurance.”
• How do you achieve a healthy living environment? Adessium Foundation supports a variety of interventions. For example, by backing organizations that use the law to protect nature and boosting citizen initiatives. Here are three examples.

From our program Informed Society

• What you buy, which news you read, who you vote for. How much do big tech companies influence those choices? Open Markets Institute investigates the power and influence that these companies have. Over people as individuals and democracies as a whole. “Everyone suffers.”
• The fog of war. That’s how Emily Tripp refers to the myths and misinformation that develop in conflict zones. Airwars documents the names of killed and wounded civilians, so they don’t end up getting swept under the carpet too. “Our data is an important piece of the puzzle.”
