Critical Mass – The Fear Factory
In a world where we let our fears influence our behaviour, policies, choices and vote, fear has become a commodity. Whoever controls the button that triggers, overcomes or manipulates our fear, is sitting on a goldmine. Fortunately, that button doesn’t exist. Or does it?
What if there was a place that created all of our fears? What would it look like? How are alarming headlines, doom scenarios and suggestive news items created? How are they professionally tested, rolled out, and optimized? And who profits? The Fear Factory is a thought experiment developed by Critical Mass, that confronts the audience with the grip social fear has on us and who its main targets are, but also teaches us how to resist it and how to shield ourselves from fear.
The Fear Factory opened in Utrecht on 12 April, 2019. This interactive exhibit about the process of fear teaches the audience how they can be manipulated, and how to respond to it. Adessium Foundation supports the project because of its innovative approach, and because it’s relevant to our times, the information society we live in, and our position within it.
