Oceans cover nearly half the Earth’s surface, yet we know less about them than about the universe. We do know that the global marine ecosystem is being damaged by climate change, pollution, gas and oil extraction, and above all industrial fishing. The oceans belong to all of us, but they are barely protected by international legislation.
The Global Ocean Commission, whose members are influential politicians, works to protect and restore the world’s oceans. Thanks in part to the commission’s report “From Decline to Recovery,” the importance of healthy oceans has risen on the political and public agenda. The report contains recommendations for an effective system of regulation, monitoring, and enforcement. Ultimately, the careful management of the high seas should lead to a healthy marine ecosystem worldwide, benefiting the billions of people who depend on it.
Adessium Foundation is supporting the Global Ocean Commission as part of our commitment to the responsible use of the world’s oceans.
